It was a match made in fishing heaven… well, kind of.

Team Mercury member Darren ‘Dizzy’ Borg has teamed up with V8 Supercar driver James Courtney to thrash the competition in a special celebrity fishing contest organised by Australian Fishing Championships (AFC).

Cricket legend Matthew Hayden, actor Blair McDonough and second V8 wheelman Stephen Johnson
also took part, paired up with pro’s from the other regular AFC teams.

The one-off, made-for-TV event took place on the Tweed River in New South Wales.

The target was Bream and the rules were simple.

The pro’s and celebrities had to catch their own fish, with each handing over their biggest five for weighing.

“The pro’s had no problems reaching their limit, but the celebrities had trouble getting anything into the boat,” said a smiling AFC Executive Producer, Steve Morgan.

“Dizzy played it smart and turned from fisherman to teacher, and he must have done a good job because James was the only celebrity to bring in five fish.

“I have to say Team Mercury pretty much smashed them. They were the only guys to catch their limit. I think the best of the rest only had seven or eight.”

The celebrity contest should go to air later this year as the first episode of the new AFC series, the rest of which will be filmed next month.

Yamaha’s quest for innovation has pushed beyond the manufacturing stable and onto the pages of their new 2009 catalogue.

Bursting at the seams in full-on colour and gloss, the stunning 40 page catalogue features the entire range of Yamaha outboards plus a unique fold-out spread on the world-first V8 4-stroke models from Australia’s best selling outboard brand.

Local Australian boating brands feature heavily across the pages of Yamaha’s latest catalogue with a great selection of photos highlighting some of Australia’s most popular boat models exploring Australian waterways.

“We’re really proud of our new 2009 catalogue. We believe it highlights the strength of our range.” said Brett Hampson, National Sales and Marketing Manager for Marine Products at Yamaha Motor Australia.

“We continue to offer Australian boaters an ever expanding suite of products, accessories and premium services each year which means the number pages needed to promote them continues to grow. It is also great to be able to promote Australian boat brands on Australian waters using our Yamaha outboards.”

Yamaha has also unveiled a sweet of new products and technologies for the 2009 boating season with the recent upgrade of the ground breaking 250hp 4-stroke engine topping the list. Delivering drive-by-wire technology for ultra smooth throttle control and gear shifts, the new F250B offers both recreational and commercial boaters a newly refined high-horsepower Yamaha outboard experience.

Protection Plus continues to be a popular service for Yamaha customers who wish to have complete protection for their Yamaha outboard and boating products. Comprising Yamaha Marine Insurance (YMI), DataDotDNA, Extended Service Protection (ESP) plus extended 3 and 4 year warranties, Protection Plus offers true peace of mind and is outlined in full at the beginning of Yamaha’s new 2009 catalogue.

The Yamaha family is also growing each year with a range of boating identities, sports personalities and leading Australian businesses all choosing the power of Yamaha outboards. Featured throughout the 2009 catalogue, Australia’s own WBA World Champion boxer Danny Green, prolific fishing writer Steve Starling and internationally respected Huon Aquaculture salmon enterprise all rely on Yamaha.

Available throughout Yamaha’s extensive dealer network, the new Yamaha 2009 Series outboard catalogue is a must read for all serious boating enthusiasts.

Yamaha outboards are available through an Australia-wide network of authorised Yamaha outboard dealers. All Yamaha 4-stroke outboards are supported with a full 4-year manufacturer’s warranty and all 2-stroke outboards are backed by a 3 year warranty – standard conditions apply.

Mercury Propellers is proud to introduce the new Bravo Three propeller.

Featuring a four-blade front and a three-blade rear design, the new Bravo Three will
improve the overall performance of virtually any sports-cruiser.

“This new and improved Bravo Three will deliver enhanced acceleration and better top speed in most applications,” said Mercury’s National Parts and Accessories Manager, Mick Hall.

“Which is exactly what boat owners want, but not only that, it has been designed to develop less cavitation which will further reduce the erosion of the blade surfaces.”

The original Bravo Three – a twin three-blade prop – has earned a huge following around the world for its overall performance, but the new Bravo Three lifts the bar even higher.

“With an extra blade, the new Bravo Three provides a superior hold on the water which translates to better handling,” Mick said.

“It also comes with tighter pitch offerings – from 19” to 30” – which provides better compatibility with various hull and engine combinations.”

The new Bravo Three looks great too. A high-polish option provides outstanding aesthetics as well as enhanced stain and corrosion resistance, which makes it an excellent choice for salt water boaters.

Comfort, innovation and prestigious luxury are the keywords behind the design of the largest craft in the Itama fleet. The brand new, sleeker and more streamlined SeventyFive is now ready to be unveiled to markets and public thanks to the intense commitment and close working relationship of the Itama and Ferretti Group Engineering Departments and yacht designer Marco Casali.
DESIGN EVOLUTION
The first development that has been made with regard to previous models is the boat’s exterior design that has been deliberately perfected to enhance the craft’s aura of power. High bows, a distinctively curved profile and a sleek structure thanks to its slim central roof are the features that distinguish this dynamic open yacht and highlight its sporting spirit.
On going onboard, on the other hand, the first thing that strikes you is the extraordinarily high quality of the living areas and the revolutionary use of space. The innovative approach that has been adopted here has created an even greater layout differentiation and a higher level of functionality, while at the same time maintaining the exceptionally high standard of finishings that these craft are famous for. The end result? Stunning appeal and highly exclusive features.
CARBON INNOVATION
If we begin by focussing on technology and materials, this craft is fitted with a very special carbon fibre and glass windshield and avantop. The new, autoclave-moulded carbon and glass windshield is no less than 10.70 metres long at the sides and 4.50 metres wide. The entire windshield is therefore almost 26 metres long, a highly innovative feature in terms of both its unique golf club-shaped window section and its spacious front opening that slides away with a pantograph movement to join the cockpit to the sundeck in the bows via an original central walkway. This innovation makes accessing the whole below decks area both safer and more convenient as there is no longer any need to use the boat’s waterway to move around.
The use of carbon fibre also saves 60% of the weight of a steel windshield of this size. A breakthrough that significantly improves performance in terms of both speed and fuel consumption; two features that are fundamental for a craft with such a sporting character.
The avantop also boasts a revolutionary new structure that allows it to slide forward and cover, in just a few seconds, the whole front of the cockpit when sailing.
The cockpit is highly innovative too, and features a helm console with a vertical design suspended on a central upright, which separates the cockpit’s living area from the second, more intimate, dinette to the fore of the console. The helm station is protected by the fixed structure of the avantop that stretches over it like an umbrella, covering 14.35 square metres. Thanks to an electric drive system, the front shell of the top can slide forward as far as the windshield to cover an incredible 19 square metres.
A brilliant combination of design, weight distribution and engineering enables the avantop to be both stylish and highly efficient, and the central uprights have been deliberately designed to improve visibility. Great care has also been taken over the style of the retractable bimini top that covers the dinette. This opens by stowing away the fabric in a special carbon housing that closes automatically. Both the windshield and the avantop clearly express the incredible design talent that has succeeded in restyling the typically 70s corners and contours of these parts of the boat.
A TRULY LUXURIOUS COCKPIT
The cockpit is clearly designed to be one of the hallmarks of the boat, in terms of both its size and remarkable features. Measuring almost 60 square metres, the area is divided into 4 zones that include a second dinette decorated with the same fabric as the large horseshoe-shaped sofa in the centre of the cockpit. The white fibreglass helm console and its distinctive black safety guards conceal seating that is also part of this second dinette. The aim of the design here has been to make these areas as private and as comfortable as possible by using original solutions such as LED and optic fibre lighting. LED floor lighting has been used on all the walkways on the craft. The spacious, almost full beam, stern sundeck with double side walkways is located over the hangar that comfortably houses the craft’s tender or jet ski as well as a small crane to launch them with. The aft deck is fitted with a built-in gangplank that extends to a convenient length and also doubles as a swimming ladder. It also features two comfortable sofas upholstered in a special waterproof fabric that can slide together to form a large horseshoe shape that can sit up to 12 people around a teak table with lacquered white edges. In general, all the furnishings have glass fibre frameworks with teak tops and doors.
A large chaise-longue has also been included under the windshield in front of the helm console, so that passengers can relax and enjoy cruising in complete luxury. On the left of the central console there is also an ergonomic seat for the co-pilot.
AN EXTREMELY VERSATILE LAYOUT
The craft’s standard layout includes 4 cabins (a Master Cabin, a full beam Vip cabin, and two guest cabins, one with side-by-side twin beds and one with bunk beds) and 4 bathrooms, as well as a twin crew cabin with its own bathroom and toilet. An alternative version of the craft with 3 cabins and bathrooms is also available. This layout, designed to enhance still further the craft’s propensity for socializing, features an unusually large dinette that can be fitted with its own bar and on request, a 60 inch TV.
SUPERIOR STYLE BELOW DECKS
The interiors here are decorated with warm, cosy colours that make the luxurious, full beam Master Cabin in the centre of the boat, even more welcoming. The cabin is fitted with special low furniture to enhance the beam of the boat and two large ‘open view’ windows situated on both sides of the cabin to offer direct visual contact with the sea even below decks. To enjoy these splendid sea views, a chaise longue has also been placed under the window on the left. The cabin also includes a teak dressing table with a mirror, a leather pouf with underseat storage space, a huge cabin wardrobe and another closet in the entrance area. Soft woollen carpets and natural ‘velvet effect’ teak furniture tops are used both here and in the VIP cabin, and the bed heads and surrounds are upholstered in matching leather. Special fixed ceiling light fixtures incorporating LEDs and adjustable halogen spotlights fitted with twin backdrop plates have also been adopted. These lighting solutions have been designed and made exclusively for this craft. The Master bathroom is divided into two separate areas, the shower and the toilet. Immediately on the left there is an elegant, black, acrylic stone washbasin with twin taps. The furnishings are made of ash, whereas wengé has been chosen for the floors. The large shower cubicle has a glass door and is decorated with Bisazza mosaic tiling. Continuing onto the ultramodern style of the VIP cabin, a number of highly practical features can be noted immediately; like the reading lights incorporated in the bed head and the fact that the bed rests on a raised teak platform with two leather benches on either side of it. Under this there is a large and convenient, natural teak chest of drawers plus two more storage spaces. The walls are decorated with the same elegantly bright lacquered finish as the Master Cabin. The two guest cabins situated on either side of the craft towards the bows have been deliberately designed to match each other in terms of both colour and materials. Teak has been used for both the floors and furniture and the walls are panelled in linen. The first guest cabin has side-by-side twin beds, whereas the second is fitted with bunk beds. A similar solution has been adopted in the crew cabin, but in this case a Pullman bed has been fitted, which means the top bed can be stowed away.
THE TASTEFULLY DESIGNED DINETTE AND STOREROOM
The dinette area offers levels of potential and comfort that guarantee real pleasure. The warmth of a woollen carpet precedes a large horseshoe-shaped leather sofa that wraps around a square teak table with white lacquered edges and a special motorized opening mechanism. The sofa can comfortably sit up to 8 people, and opposite it stands a matching natural teak cabinet housing a built- in plasma screen television. In front of the dinette, but separated from it by a satin finish glass door, is the galley. Completely furnished in lacquered gloss white, the galley, can be reached directly from the dinette and the crew cabin as well as having its own separate stairway leading outside. The area is equipped with a series of special features including a ceramic glass hob with an oven and dishwasher located underneath it, as well as a slide-out breakfast table complete with Poltrona Frau foldaway leather chairs. There is a separate, stainless steel, twin door fridge column, and the corridor leading down from the Master staircase includes a practical storage space with a stowaway washing machine. Ivory coloured linen has been used for the wall panelling to match the walls in the corridor that leads to the guest cabins situated in the bows.
The new SeventyFive is therefore a craft that offers even the most demanding open yacht lover an experience that is profoundly luxurious, innovative, and embellished with all the glamour and value of a genuine classic. This is thanks also to its superb performance that has been developed to express to the utmost the company philosophy, ‘The pleasure of Power’. With its twin 1823 hp MTU engines combined with Arneson ASD 14 drives, the Itama SeventyFive can reach peak speeds of up to 43 knots or cruise comfortably at 38 knots.
Itama has also decided to produce a limited VHP (very high performance) edition of this yacht. In addition to featuring a number of special construction details to enhance its sporting aura, this craft will also be fitted with a special drive system that will allow it to reach speeds of up to 60 knots.

Retaining their class-leading lightweight and compact styling, the new engines are enhanced with electronic fuel injection, Honda’s revolutionary Boosted Low Speed Torque (BLAST™) air/fuel ratio and ignition-timing technology, and Lean Burn Control to deliver powerful start-up and acceleration together with outstanding fuel economy during cruising.

BLAST™, along with a newly-designed, streamlined gear case and other improvements, contributes to greater acceleration and a higher top speed, while Lean Burn Control results in a 22% improvement in fuel economy over the previous models.

Battery charging capacity has also been increased to 17amps – over 1.7 times that of the previous BF40 and BF50.The new models are compatible with Honda’s latest general purpose engine diagnostic system (Dr H) and also feature a new one-touch plastic cap, which permits easy inspection of anode wear inside the engine, for significantly improved ease of maintenance.

Consistently leading the world in environmental performance, Honda has also managed to reduce noise levels by 1.0dB over previous models through such improvements as a longer exhaust pipe and an optimised rib design inside the upper portion of the extension case.

Both models exhibit outstanding environmental performance and exceed: 2008 CARB emissions standards – the most stringent in the world; US EPA standards for 2006; and domestic Japanese voluntary regulations.

As is the case with every other model in Honda’s outboard engine range, the new BF40 and BF50 also achieve the Outboard Engine Distributors Association’s (OEDA) three-star rating for ultra low emissions.

Mercury Racing has introduced the all-new Verado 350 SCi – a superb in-line six-cylinder outboard which will give speed-lovers more power and better performance than any comparable engine.

From the top cowl to the all-new gear case, the new Verado 350 SCi is designed to exceed expectations in product quality, reliability and performance by combing the brains of Verado with the brawn of Mercury Racing.

The engine’s performance comes from a 2.6-litre supercharged engine which features electronically controlled sequential multi-port fuel injection, four valves per cylinder, double overhead cam design, a charge-air cooler and electronic boost bypass control.

The new top cowl design, with fresh air intakes on the top and front, helps maintain consistent engine operating temperatures by circulating cool air around the powerhead and associated components. The cowl design also channels fresh air directly to the supercharger thereby improving power and performance.

The Verado 350 SCi is super-reliable, with the strength, toughness and durability recreational boaters and offshore sport anglers demand.

An all-new sand-cast driveshaft housing has been created for enhanced durability. Stainless steel guide plates with fibre wear pads and high-performance engine mounts enhance engine stability at high speeds

A brand new, hydrodynamic gearcase has also been added to handle the engine’s high torque and power output.

And there’s no need to worry about noise. Patented sound-dampening technology means this high performance outboard is remarkably quiet.

The Verado 350 SCi also comes with SmartStart - all you have to do is turn the key and release, and the engine will start automatically.

Electro-hydraulic power steering and SmartCraft Digital Throttle & Shift (DTS) provide for an exceptionally smooth and responsive driving experience combined with sports car-like handling and performance.

With a limited two-year warranty, the exciting Verado 350 SCi will be available before Christmas. The 25” and 30” versions will be on sale through all Mercury Verado dealers, with the 20” model sold through race dealers only.

Yamaha Motor Corporation has unveiled a second generation four stroke 250hp outboard featuring digital electronic remote control for greatly improved operability and reliability.

The new F250B is based on the proven 3.3 litre V6 from the ground breaking F250A. The new release Yamaha F250B offers a suite of technological advantages for smooth throttle operation, responsive performance plus secure and reliable gear shifting.

At the heart of the new model F250B is Yamaha’s digital electronic remote control system. Governed and monitored by Yamaha’s sophisticated Engine Control Module (ECM), throttle control and gear shift is digitally controlled through a remote electronic box linked to the throttle lever.

Throttle response is also greatly improved for when precise control is needed for bar crossings or low-speed trolling offshore. The F250B features a variable trolling rpm switch on the 6Y8 digital tacho which adjusts trolling speed as desired in increments of 50 rpm between 600 and 1000 rpm.

“Yamaha has made numerous technical advancements since the first release of the F250A, so our ground breaking F250 was due for an upgrade,” said Brett Hampson, National Sales and Marketing Manager for Marine Products at Yamaha Motor Australia.

“Boaters will love the smooth power on tap from the F250B with our advanced digital electronic remote control system. For applications where the engine is continually in and out of gear, the digital shift control delivers greater reliability than ever before.”

The ECM onboard the F250B also governs Yamaha’s multi-point fuel injection system which enables precise control of fuel/air mixture depending on the load and speed, to increase combustion efficiency for superior performance.

Quicker acceleration is achieved on the F250B through the use of long air intake manifolds and Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) to boost low and mid-range torque. The 24-valve Double Over-Head Camshaft also provides greater valve timing control for clean and powerful combustion.

Yamaha’s new F250B is available as two variations, the standard right-rotation propeller and a counter rotation model. Both models offer 25 inch and 30 inch transom versions.

Sydney Harbour has had its first look at twin Yamaha F350 V8 outboards in action with the popular H2O Taxis service now enjoying the benefits of using Yamaha’s latest V8 technology.

Stepping up from twin Yamaha F225 4-stroke outboards, the H2O ‘WaterBus’ now boasts twin 5.3 litre V8 Yamaha outboards that produce a combined 700hp to deliver the torque required to push a 5 tonne boat with up to an additional 3 tonnes of passenger weight onboard.

H2O Taxis provide a complete ferry-style service around the famous Sydney Harbour through to Parramatta River. From Manly, Middle Harbour and all the way through to Homebush Stadium, H2O Taxis provides a fully customised taxi service with over 200 local pick-up and drop-off locations.

Upgrading the power onboard the flagship 10.8m vessel with two of Yamaha’s most powerful outboard engines was the logical step for H2O Taxis owner Shane Kearns.

“I had already done over 3000 hours on my two Yamaha F225 4-strokes and was looking at upgrading to the F250 models when the new V8 F350 hit the market,” explained Shane.

“On a full load my twin F225 outboards were really working hard. Having the two Yamaha V8 outboards on the back has transformed the performance of this large, heavy boat.”

“Over the 35 engine hours clocked so far I have nearly halved my fuel bill with the twin F350 outboards returning a combined 31 litres per hour across a range of harbour conditions and boat loads. I originally thought my fuel gauges were wrong until I started closely monitoring my fuel intake.”

Shane Kearns bought the 10.8m aluminium tri-hull nearly 2 years ago, which was built to survey in 1995 for the renowned Doyles Restaurant and licensed to carry 26 passengers. After some customising and an engine swap from twin Yamaha 2-strokes to the F225 4-strokes, the vessel was re-surveyed to carry 49 passengers and the roof rated to 1 tonne for equipment transport to fulfil a range of water taxis duties.

“With the F350s on the back, I travel at an average speed of 18-22 knots with the engines sitting comfortably on 3000 rpm,” said Shane. “Changing the prop from 15” to 19” has produced incredible thrust with the boat wanting to push forwards at idle revs. I opened her up to 5,000rpm recently which produced 38 knots.”

Yamaha’s world-first V8 F350 outboard has been warmly embraced by the Australian boating market with leading local and imported boat brands looking to the V8 for unmatched power to weight performance. Redefining the power options for larger planning vessels, the V8 F350 produces the torque expected from an inboard, with the weight, access and space saving advantages of an outboard. And skippers across Australia are savouring the advantage.

“Our WaterBus feels more balanced with the two V8s on the back and planes a lot easier than my previous setup,” said Shane.

“In the last 21 months I have done approximately 20,000 nautical miles (37,000 km) around the harbour and clocked up over 3000 hours on my original F225 4-strokes. I now have every reason to expect big things from my new Yamaha V8 outboards.”

The twin Yamaha V8 F350 rig was supplied and installed by authorised Yamaha dealer Power Marine at Waverton on Sydney’s lower North Shore.
